Two Men Contemplating the Moon by Caspar David Friedrich is a landscape painting that depicts two men in traditional German dress, standing on a mountain path and looking at the moon.

The painting depicts two men, identified as Friedrich and his friend August Heinrich, standing on a mountain path and looking at the moon. The men are dressed in traditional German costume, with the figure on the right wearing a beret and cape, and the figure on the left wearing a cap and coat.

The painting is rich in symbolism, with the moon representing a vanishing point of dreamy oblivion. The men's attire represents the Old German dress code, which was adopted by radical German students in 1815 to oppose the policies of the Napoleonic Wars. The painting also features a dead, uprooted oak tree, an evergreen fir tree, and a rock, which create a threatening environment for the figures.

In this ethereal painting, human and natural symbolism are subtly interwoven. The moon, an old Christian sign of hope, gleams from behind a withered tree, watched by two men, perhaps the artist and a pupil, in the 'old German' costume favoured by the resistance movement during the years of Napoleonic occupation.
