The Dance Class (1874) | Edgar Degas | Painting Art Print | Wall Frame
In 1874 Degas produced 'The Dance Class' a painting depicting ballerinas and their mothers waiting for a class to start conducted by Jules Perrot, a famous ballet master. The scene is set at the rehearsal room in the old Paris Opera which had recently burnt down.
The painting depicts about two dozen women, including ballerinas and their mothers, in various poses:
A dancer in the lower left faces the viewer and sits near a cello. She wears a red jacket and an ice-blue tutu.
Two dancers in the center, one seated and one standing. The seated girl wears a petal-pink jacket and gazes at the standing girl.
At least six more dancers sit or stand along the far wall.
The Dance Class is on display at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A companion work is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris
