The painting depicts the Tennis Court Oath, a key moment in the French Revolution when representatives of the Third Estate swore to remain together until a constitution was established. The oath took place in the Royal Tennis Court, a room that was formerly used for the sport of jeu de paume, an older version of tennis. This is when Estate General proclaimed themselves as the National Assembly of France.
