Spanish Surrealist artist Salvador Dali had a lifelong fascination with American actress and sex icon Mae West. In 1935 Dali used a photographic portrait of West to produce a collage of her face which also looks like a room. This double image was part of Dali’s panoramic critical period, a style of surrealism developed by Dali which included creating optical illusions to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind. The idea of using West’s face also stemmed from Dali’s good friend and founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud who once claimed that 'the dream image of a room was in the representation of a woman'.
