Laxmi Vishnu | Vintage Indian Folk Art Print | Wall Frame

This Kalighat painting featuring goddess Laxmi, along with a male figure—presumably her husband Vishnu of the Hindu trinity—is deceptive as the divine couple has been rendered in the manner of the other divine—and more popular—couple of Radha and Krishna. While the work retains the rich colouring in folk style, the curtain at the top is inspired by Western works of art that the painters were getting exposed to; it lends an element of theatricality to the composition. The quirky headgears appear to be the artist’s reinvention of Mughal and Western style tiara and Bengali bridegroom's hat respectively.
